C., APRIL 24, 1963 BI-WEEKLY—$2.00 YEARLY Hines’ Presidency Of SGA Disputed ★ ★ ★ Myers And Anderson Win Run- Off Honors Freshman Baxter Myers was cleeted Student Government treasurer for 1963-64 in a run off election held Monday, April 22. Last week Myers tied Steve Cherry ior the SGA past, making a run-off election nec essary. Myers has previously been a representative to the SGA Interfaith Commission, Ori entation, and Grievance Com mittee. He is now working on the Social CJommission of the Freshman Class, and he has been an active participant in all Freshman activities. The chairmanship of tlie Student Life Association will be Betty Anderson’s respon sibility next year. She was tied with Winni Stine for the position, but Monday’s run off election determined the winner. Betty is a rising Senior, and she is an experienced hand at SGA work, having been a presidential aide and a member of the Assembly Committee this year. She has been editor of both the an nual and newspaper at Wes leyan, and her name appears regularly on the Dean’s List. JOHN HINES ROBERT STEPHENS JOAN LAMBERTH Stephens Takes Vice-Presidency, Lamberth Named New Secretary BAXTER MYERS BETTY ANDERSON Rembrandt Art Is On Display An exhibit entitled “Rem brandt’s Etchings and Draw ings” opened for a two-week period of display in the Ex hibit Gallery at Wesleyan Col lege on April 16. The show consists of 50 items, chosen and arranged by the Rijks- museum in Amsterdam with the intention of acquainting Americans with some of the lesser known works of Rem brandt. The exhibit is on loan from the Netherlands Infor mation Service. The magic name of Rem brandt (1606-1669) is recog nized as one of the greatest of the masters of both the brush and the etching needle. His great paintings are well known. No less important are his many magnificant etch ings which alone would have established Rembrandt’s name as a master. Between 1626 and 1669, in the course of 44 years, Rem brandt executed about 300 etchings and 2,000 drawings. Dr. Gatewood Given Second Grant Of Year Dr. Willard Gatewood, chair man of the Division of Social Sciences and Associate Pro- fesMT of History at Wesleyan, has been awarded Ms second researcli grant of tlie year. The first award was from the Hari-y S. Truman Library Institute for a study of the Truman Administration, and the second grant is from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Boston. The monetary grant iis to be used for a study of the movement for a national university from 1800 to 1914. Dr. Gatewood began re search for the project about two years ago, and tlie Aca demy grant is to continue rather than to initiate Ms re coarch. The ultimate goal of the project is a publication of some sort. Dr. Gatewood expects to complete his work some time in the next three years, but ais yet he ha® no definite schedule for the study. The grant wiU provide op portunity for travel to Phila delphia, New York, and other cities where information is located. Dr. Gatewood’s study WiU not be Umited, but the available information is scat tered in major libraries on the eastern seaboard. John Hines’ victory in Qie Student Government Associa tion presidential election has been disputed twice in the past four days. The original election, held on Friday, April 19, was ruled void when the Student Life Association found the eligible list of presidential candidates to be incorrect. The election for the top Required Exams Set For May 7 Sophomore proficiency exams, tlie “sophomore hurdl es,” have been scheduled by a faculty committee for May 7. Part I of the exam, spell ing, will be given in Gravely 105 at 10:30 a, m. and Part II, writing, is set for 1 p. m. Successfully completing the exams is required for grad uation. They are given to sophomores yearly. Those so phomores failing a part (or both parts) of the test are “invited” to take them again the following year. Along with a list of suggested study ma terial, the following lists of names are posted on the bulletin boards throughout all buildings: 1. Students who must take the entire exam 2. Transfers who muist take the entire exam 3. Students who must retake the writing part of the exam 4. Students who must retake the spelling part of the exam Sophomores and Juniors who have previously failed the test must take the appropriate exam. SGA post was held again on Tuesday, AprU 23, but this election was also voided be cause Hines’ victory by accla mation violated parliament ary rules of order. The April 23 acclamation wais not unani mous, and it ignored the SGA Constitutional rule calling for secret ballot. Furthermore, the election did not take into account all possible absentee votes. Nominations for the office of SGA president will be held again this Thursday after Chapel. A student body vote will be taken for the third time on Friday, April 26. There were no conflicts in the election of vice-president and secretary, and the origi nal winners wiU take their offices as scheduled. Robert Stephens, new SGA vice-pre sident, is a rising junior, and he has worked as president of the Sophomore Class for the 1962-63 academic year. He has also directed the activities of the Grievance Committee of the SGA, and he was a member of the im portant Ring Committee ear lier in the year. The new SGA secretary is Joan Lamberth, an experienc ed student government work er. Joan has served previous ly as secretary of the Asso ciation, president of Nash dorm, and chairman of tlie Student Life Association. There has been discussion about the legality of the Stu dent Life Association Attor ney-General nomination, and the SLA is presently debat ing the question. Its decision will be posted as isoon as it is available. Students present ly nominated for the position are Dennis Schultz, Marshall Pridgen, and Doug Zellner. Admission is $.50 i Dr. Allen F. Cordts will be come Director of Student Life at Wesleyan College in July. Ais Director of Student Life, he will have responsibility for Student Government pro grams, the Student Activities on and off campus. Residence Counseling, the Student Guid ance and Advisory programs, and related activities. He will, however, teach one sec tion of isoeiology each se mester to keep in touch with the classroom and his teach ing interests. A native of New York City, he is currently serving as Assistant Dean of Students at Central Michigan University, of Mt. Pleaisant, Mich. He was graduated with honors in sociology from Alfred Uni versity in 1949. He earned the M.A. degree in sociology at Northwestern University, then earned his M.A. and Ed. D. degrees in Student Person nel Administration at Colum bia University. Dr. Cordts served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict, with the ranJc of Tech Sergeant working with radar technology. After com pleting his graduate study he served as resident counselor at the University of Florida for four yeans. Here he work ed with student activities in Men’s Residences. For the past six years he has served as Assistant Dean of Stu dents with broad activity in many phases of student life. Dr. Cordts is an active Ro- tarian, active m Community Chest work, sings in the choir of the Firist Methodist Church, and served as a member of tho Official Board. He is a member of Pi Gamma Mu, and was elected to “Who’s Wlio in American Colleges and Universities” while at Alfred University. He is a member of the American Per sonnel and Guidance Asso ciation.
